Description
Developed with Dodge’s credo of ‘bold, powerful and capable,’ the 2009 Dodge Challenger re-creates the vintage American muscle car, blending modern engineering and technology with authentic, nostalgic flair. Offered in three distinct models in North America, Dodge Challenger SRT8®, Dodge Challenger R/T and Dodge Challenger SE, it is the first five-passenger, two-door coupe produced from the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger platforms and the first modern-day HEMI-powered car equipped with a six-speed manual.
The challenge for the design team was capture all the emotion and appeal of the original Challenger series, in a package that offered the latest in performance, safety and comfort. Staying true to the concept car that debuted to rave reviews at the 2006 North American International Auto Show, led to a production car version tailor made to delight driving enthusiasts across several generations – offering an unmistakable design, world-class handling, powerful engines, and advanced technology, including UConnect® hands-free communication, keyless push-button start, electronic stability and side-curtain air bags.
The new Challenger features a long, raised performance hood with scoops, a recessed grille and round, dual headlamps that are reminiscent of the original Dodge Challenger, while the bold A-line, or character line, that runs from stem to stern gives the car strikes an unmistakable muscle car profile. Dual rectangular exhaust outlets complete the look from the rear.
Inside, the trapezoidal door-panel cove and gauge cluster, dark headliner and slanted shifter console are also inspired by the original Challenger. However the modern interpretation of this two-door coupe also offers best-in-class rear head and leg room and best-in-class cargo space for added comfort and functionality.
When outfitted with the new-generation 5.7-liter HEMI V-8, the Dodge Challenger also delivers under the hood, offering increased fuel economy (on average 4 percent) higher horsepower (more than 30 hp) and torque (up to 20 lb-ft.) and travels from zero to 60 mph in less than six seconds.
