Duality by Fernando Machado, Brazil

2014: Driven | Undriven.

Fernando Machado (1975) is a Brazilian designer. He was born in Curitiba – PR. He became interested in automotive design at thirteen years old when he won a book that talked about how to draw cars.

He has a bachelor’s degree in Product Design and a postgraduate degree in Human Factors.

In 2007, he moved with his family to Caxias do Sul, RS, where he began his professional career working for the Brazilian company Agrale (manufacturer of tractors, trucks and 4×4 utilitarian) where he still works today.

DUALITY was born with a great ambition: Becoming the first car in the world that fully meets requirements of an off-road and a race car.

But how to harmonize these extremes? The vehicle has four sets composed for: Two tires (one off road and the other for high speeds), two hexagonal polymers (for high impact absorption), two wheels and six power cells. In addition, an articulated suspension which allows the vehicle to switch between the modules off-road and high speed.

The advantages to having the motor inside the tire is to increase the internal space of the cabin and to lower the center of gravity ensuring greater stability to the vehicle.

To provide safety for people around the car when the off-road tires are running the high speed tires are stopped and vice versa (like a fenders function).

The undrive module is a true revitalizing area. The cabin has a transparent roof allowing passengers to admire the view while resting in a seat that simulates movements of a professional masseuse. The idea is to relax after of a troubling and long day and also promote interaction with family or just make business meetings for example.

A vehicle that delivers pure emotion! Imagine running on the high road and be able to leave the asphalt to jump in the mud without bogging down? Now you don´t need two cars to do it. Just the DUALITY!
